The Arabic word harem means the place of the women. The most important part of it was the zenana,
or the inner room where the sultan's fantasies were played out. Each woman was given her own decorated
apartment. Because the ladies of the harem are
from many different countries, the apartments were decorated to feel them comfortable and satisfied with their status
in life.
According to the Islamic law, a man can have
as many wives as he wants, with the traditional number four. However, concubines are not limited
and many harems expand to the thousands. Emperor Jahangir of India has a harem of over 6,200 women during
the early years of the 17th century.
A harem’s controlled by the Valide Sultan, or the sultan's
mother. There were other female officials directly responsible to the mother of
the harem. Each of these officials had younger harem members under their
training for other future managerial assignments.
During the late 1500s, Mehmed III
raised to the throne of the Ottoman Empire. His mother, Safiye Sultan, as the
Valide Sultan becomes the leader of the harem and one of his most important
advisers. She was not allowed to be directly
involved in state politics but Safiye was able to influence the sultan's judgements,
sometimes plainly and directly.
